It's all for the funny, but analyzing the series seriously puts every single character squarely into Dysfunction Junction. Every one of the characters is a grade-A Jerkass at one point or another, even the saintly-seeming Kasumi. If you can't maintain a sense of humor, you miss the point. The rest of the cast is more or less similar.

Either way it goes I’m looking forward to binging this show and getting back on that emotional rollercoaster. The highs will be bright and ecstatic while the lows will be dark and depressing. My guess is that this show is like being bipolar and off your meds. It looks fun and lighthearted, but also that it’s likely going to have some darker parts to it. The art is pretty great with vibrant colors and sharp line work. The show seems like a good slice-of-life kinda show focused around music and instruments. I was a little surprised to find that I didn’t enjoy the intro sequence in terms of art or music all that much though.

So my first impression from this show is that I will probably love it. I believe she’ll be the series main heroine as I see her the most often on promotional art, as well as the whole lighting up Kousei’s world aspect of the episode. She demonstrates her physical strength beating Kousei to a pulp when she mistakenly identifies him as a pervert who was trying to take a picture of her panties. Kaori is a violinist who also shows talent with other instruments as well. More than likely he’ll be a source of comedic relief in the series with one or two very serious moments. Though according to Tsubaki he’s the enemy of all women. Watari is also one of Kousei’s friends, and is quite the young ladies man. She’s high energy, bright, cheerful, and sees the world in vibrant colors - by Kousei’s assumptions. She’s overtly strong and pretty talented in baseball and probably other sports as well. Tsubaki is Kousei’s childhood friend and likely has a crush on him. However when he first sees Kaori playing a melodica, he sees color in the world again. His father is often away with work, so he spends a lot of time alone and depressed. Since then he’s seen the world as dull and gray. Kousei is a former piano savant who stopped playing after his abusive mother passed away two years ago. They all seem fairly unique from one another and we can already tell a good deal about them from this episode alone. We’re introduced to Kousei, Tsubaki, Watari and Kaori, our four main protagonists (I assume).

It did a great job of exploring most of the main characters, as well as an information dump that was just manageable. So I’ve just finished the first episode, Monotone/Colorful, and I really think I’m going to like this show.
